Watermelons

I would like to take this opportunity to express to you my passion for watermelons.

This is not a code word for something secret - it's a large fleshy fruit (Citrullus lanatus, Family Cucurbitaceae) which is pink on the inside.

In the Kalahari Desert its ancestor grows wild and is known as the Tsamma melon (Citrullus lanatus var citroides).

Mine didn't come from the Kalahari though. It's a long walk. The bonus about going is that you will find the Tsamma melons when you get there. I wonder if I can grow them myself one day? I will have to move somewhere hot. Somewhere hot, with watermelons growing there? A few more key ingredients and I will be on my way there immediately!

See you!

Victory is ours

I finished my piece.

I don't know exactly who writes my music for me, but I am very grateful.

Do you think that's a joke? It's not.

I hope to get back to telling you more facts by way of this writing platform, but since the readership of this blog consists of three halfwits, a quarter-wit, a broken bottle, a family of stick insects and a feather duster, I don't think I've been causing too many problems with my inattention. Besides, I WAS composing, you know - it IS supposed to be my JOB.

So no complaining from the likes of you, please. We finished the piece - victory is ours! For today at least.

composing - composition

I was thinking about my words of yesterday.

I know that 'composition' is the strictly accurate word for what I do. I tried to write it once or twice, but I couldn't.

Why?

Because 'composition' seems something fixed, everything known, catalogued and planned in advance of the birth. And composing is happening now, changing when it has to, living and in this moment.

I'm a composer. I do composing.

I couldn't lie to you, you see.

Secret of composing

The number one secret of composing is: keep the focus. Do not get carried away changing tempos, textures, etc to make it interesting. You do not need all that.

So, you ask, will it not get boring if it is all the same?

Yes. You've got to be good at this, you see. Is that the number two secret?

Touching Beyond

I'm writing a piece now. It will soon be finished.

I don't know where the music comes from. I do have some control over it, but mostly I can only control how bad it is. So I try not to control too much, since I obviously don't help.

This feeling, when I am out there/in here, writing, I can't tell you! Like lying in fertiliser, like having nourishment without eating, like warmth without heat, like life and living just from holding the pen and trying not to make too much of a mess of music!

You're welcome to try, of course. But please don't try too hard. You don't need to add anything; just don't take away from what is already there.
